A native of York County, Jared Mellott attended Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, where he majored in Political Science. While in college, he joined the Phi Beta Kappa national honor society. In 2004, he graduated summa cum laude and with departmental honors.
Attorney Mellott then attended the William & Mary School of Law, in Williamsburg, Virginia. While in law school, he served as a lead Articles Editor of the William & Mary Law Review. He also joined the Order of the Coif honor society after finishing in the top ten percent of his class. He graduated with his law degree in 2007.
Following law school, Attorney Mellott was admitted to the Pennsylvania bar. He began his legal career as Judicial Law Clerk to Judge Michael Bortner of the York County Court of Common Pleas, where he assisted the Judge in civil, family, and juvenile delinquency cases.
In 2009, Attorney Mellott joined the York County District Attorney’s Office as a Deputy Prosecutor. He worked in both the Juvenile Unit and two general trial teams. In July 2012, the District Attorney promoted him to the position of Senior Deputy Prosecutor. In this position, he supervises the Vehicular Crimes Unit. This unit prosecutes a variety of cases, including DUI, vehicular aggravated assault, hit and run accidents, fleeing and eluding, auto theft, child endangerment, and vehicular homicide.
